The Steam Awards finished up for 2021, and there was one surprise winner that stood out to The Load Screen team since Cyberpunk 2077 initially received backlash from players on all platforms. The CD Projekt Red’s futuristic FPS title won the Outstanding Story-Rich Game as voted by Steam players. This victory shows how the developer is redeeming fans’ loyalty through updates while having a solid storyline that bolsters every addition made to the game. The Load Screen covers how this win shows promise for those waiting for the next-gen version coming out later this year.

According to the Steam Award page, any non-limited Steam player can vote for and select the champions, so winning in any category is tough. The triumph for Cyberpunk 2077 in the Outstanding Story-Rich Game is more impressive with competitors that include; Life is Strange True Colors, Days Gone, and Resident Evil Village. Players selected Capcom’s latest zombie horror title for a victory in the game of the Year category, making it a fearsome foe. The fans chose Cyberpunk 2077 over these competitors despite its rough start.

The initial problems for CD Projekt Red’s dystopian action-adventure FPS were worse on consoles, but the PC was not perfect either. Platforms that are notorious for never giving out refunds for anything suddenly started doing so for Cyberpunk 2077. Eventually, the title was pulled from the PlayStation Store because of the inconsistent gameplay back on December 17, 2020. The developer worked hard until they got it back on the PlayStation Store a little over six months later, on June 21, 2021; see the CNBC Sony to reinstate Cyberpunk 2077 article for more details.

CD Projekt Red has put out additional patches that resolve gameplay and storyline issues further, giving players a better enjoyment of the beautiful stories Night City has to offer. Back in September, the developer released Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.31 for all systems that continued their focus on overhauling the game. While the last major update was over three months ago, the win at the Steam Awards shows that players are immersed in the main story of V and Johnny. Add in the narratives around Judy, Jackie, Panam, Takemura, and many more to help push the title to victory.

Cyberpunk 2077 appears worthy of redemption by PC gamers since it received the 2021 Steam Award for Outstanding Story-Rich Game. However, CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal the final release date for the next-gen versions for Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The games are currently scheduled to come out sometime in 2022, as stated by a CD Projekt Red important production update tweet. If 2021 has taught gamers anything, it is not to rush developers, especially award-winning ones. The Load Screen team will pick up those next-gen versions when CD Projekt Red has worked out all the kinks.
